Nathan - why was he in jail?

I remembered the other night how Nathan was in jail with Dodge (who told Irene this when he returned to the Bay for his final showdown with Steven). That meant that Nathan was in jail in about 1996. When he returned to the bay a while ago, he had only just been released.

What did he do to be sent to jail because he'd obviously been there for a few years.

He stole the school's money in 1994 which sent him back to jail.

I don't know if he did 8 years for that though or committed a later offence, because I slightly remember hearing something of armed robbery.
