Home and away can be beautiful (metaphorically), and have powerful scenes

Neighbours can't seem to cut it with all the silly childishness going on

Yeah, we know h&a is much better than Neighbours - agreed!

What I wanted to discuss was how we should be supporting both the aussie shows for the sake of saving Australian culture and heritage!

In many parts of the world especially in the UK, we hearmany TV critics say how Australian TV is full of rubbish and how Ozzy TV is full of American drama and shows!

To us, people in the UK we usually see h&a and Neighbours as inferior to saosp like EastEnders and corrie.

As Georgie Parker (who's romoured to guest star in Neighbours) said:

Australians should keep supporting australian drama, as it is our history and future.

Neighbours has higher viewing figures than h&a in the UK, but the Australians should be proud of Neighbours for having many viewers learning about Australian's positive way of life and culture.

So, lets stop this stupid argument of which soap is better!

Neighbours is popular in the UK!

H&A is popular in Australia!

I don't think that either is particularly better. At the end of the day, I prefer Home and Away, but that's not to say it's better, that's just my personal opinion. I still watch and enjoy Neighbours everyday, but for me, Home and Away has that special 'something'.

Neighbours definitely has higher ratings in the UK, mainly because of H&A's move to Channel 5 I fear. The problem with five is that there are still areas that can't get it properly through a terrestrial arial, so if you're a Home and Away fan and don't have digital TV, you're screwed! In my area, we can't get five at all on the terrestrial TV, in fact, one of the reasons we got Sky in 2000 was so we could continue watching Home and Away when it came back on air!

Personally, I prefer both the Aussie soaps to any of our soaps. I'm not overly keen on any of the soaps we have here, and in fact, I prefer Australian television by far. I find the dramas such as McLeod's Daughters far more entertaining than any of our stuff.

Back to the topic of H&A and Neighbours though, they both go through their good and bad phases as with any programme. Neighbours had a brilliant year in 2006 IMO, following on from some not so entertaining years. Home and Away I feel has been on a high since late 2002 with the Angie storyline, although that is not to say that it hasn't gone through some rough patches in between, especially in 2006 with some dodgy storylines, i.e. Zoe's return.

They are two totally different types of shows - there isn’t really a comparison.

Well i haveto say Home & Away wins hands down, i think that they have much better story lines too

but then again Neighbours i think can be aimed at a different audience

I don't understand why we have to like one over the other.

I watch Neighbours because it is lighthearted and you do get a good laugh and you do cry at certain things. I know that the plane bomb episode, where you saw the characters scared and saying goodbye to each other, disturbed and upset me.

I watch Home & Away because it can be lighthearted but at times so complex. It is a way to escape reality and you laugh, you cry, you make remarks about characters but the best of all, you have fun.

So I am on the fence in this debate. You can't choose between two shows that are completely different. It is impossible!

I don't always watch Neighbours but its usually the program I watch before H&A airs. It's usually quite a relief to have some light entertainment before H&A so that my brain doesn't have to struggle too much to think after work! The only thing that really annoys me is when both shows reflect their storylines. It's hard not to get bored, nor make comparisons. I wish we could keep all our Aussie dramas I hate seeing them on our screens for 2 seconds.... why is everyone hooked on American soapies?
