Home and Away or Neighbours?

In the UK, people generally seem to prefer Neighbours over Home and Away, which makes me feel like a little bit of an outcast at times, whereas it seems to me that in Austraila, Home and Away is more popular by far. Why do you think this is so?

I just always find that when I tell people to watch Home and Away they're like, no way, Neighbours is far better, Home and Away sucks. I can't figure out why. I think Neighbours is rubbish

When I watch Neighbours, in my opinion, they all seem to have these very heavy Australian accents. I am Australian so I have the accent too but when I watch Home & Away I can never hear the accent.

Ironically, Neighbours was first shown on channel 7 but was dumped for poor ratings I believe. Network ten then picked it up. Personally, I think the acters on home & away are very talented and most of the storylines, especially the settings are believable. Neighbours, from the episodes I've seen, the actors are mainly all very young and whilst most of then are talented, ex-australian idol & big brother contestants are employed as 'actors' when their talents seem to be in other fields. Having said that, internationally I belive Neighbours is more popular and many talented artists have come from Neighbours eg. Delta & Kylie.

I was going to say that Neigbours then always seem to have celebrities guest staring on their show, I know Shane Warne has filmed an episode of Neighbours which hasn't aired yet, but then I remembered Lleyton Hewitt was on Home & Away.

Also Neigbours seem to copy alot of Home & Away's storylines. The was a stalker & the stalker tampered with the plane engine causing it to go down, first on Home & Away and then several months later on Neighbours. Although home & away probably does the same thing...

I agree with the most of what you've said - only I have never watched an episoide of 'Neighbours' in my life.

However - "Home and Away" has had far more success internationally. Think of Julian McMahon, Guy Pearce, Craig McLauchlin, Dani Minogue, Dee Smart, Naomi Watts, Justine Clarke, Tempany Deckart, Ilsa Fisher and Melissa George - to name a few.

Whereas in my opinion, Neighbours stars tend to continue being famous for being famous and not creating anything else of creative worth to the industry. They're a bit like the Hilton sisters, I think. I do like Delta though.

I've just read through my post and realise I've probably been a bit harsh. Sorry, and I hope I haven't offended anyone.

I agree with this. Some people seem to treat Neighbours like it is still a novelty to have an Australian soap on our screens, and any other Aussie soap must be a copy, which is ridiculous. I think a lot of people who prefer Neighbours over Home and Away believe the latter to take itself too seriously wheras Neighbours goes as far as making fun of itself in some ways. Many of Neighbours fans in the UK are students and there has always been some attachment between the two. I think this relates to what Sunny Girl said about being famous for being famous, as most students seem to like saying they watch Neighbours more than actually watching it.

Home & Away beats Neighbours by far. I think ppl in the UK seem to "prefer" Neighbours cos of the channel it's on. If H&A was still in ITV and would get way more viewers. But Five is improving by what they're putting on it, like H&A, Prison Break, House, Greys Anatomy and Movies.
