.Cat. Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Ive just noticed so many lately, I thought their should be a thread about them. A huge similarity was between the car crashes on Shortland Street and Home and Away, just look: -Both crashes had 5 people involved -Eti (SS) and Martha, were so close to death and both almost lost their capability of walking -2 people of both crashes barely got any damage (Ric, and Alf. Scarlett, and Tama) -Both Li Mei (SS) and Kim both broke something from their waist, down (Li Mei- foot. Kim- Leg) -Both Chloe and Norman (SS) had a few injuries, and were ok- but ended up dying.

And then there was the Plane Crash on Neighbours and Home and Away Some one who has studied literature can give more details on this but it has been widely said that there are only 7 storylines for any movie/play/book/soap. According to Jessamyn West, an IPL volunteer librarian, the seven basic plots are: 1 - [wo]man vs. nature 2 - [wo]man vs. man 3 - [wo]man vs. the environment 4 - [wo]man vs. machines/technology 5 - [wo]man vs. the supernatural 6 - [wo]man vs. self 7 - [wo]man vs. god/religion So its not surprising that there are similar storylines in different soaps. These storylines are planned well in advance so it must be frustrating for writers in different soaps when similar storylines are happening close together.
.Cat. Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 Fair point but thats not what im talking about. Im not saying one soap stole anothers storyline or anything and I know that theres a car crash every once in a while on a soap, but my reason for creating this thread was to post similarities between storylines that have happened on soaps (like the Car crash one).
bring-back-bobbi Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 Neighbours and Home and Away have been extremly similar for months, especially with the plane crash, Paul (nighbours) having a stalker. Both soaps at the moment have a cancer storyline going on (Steph in Neighbours and Flynn in Home and Away) and they both have a "will-they-wont-they" thing going on with couples - Martha and Jack/Boyd and Jenae. Sometimes its almost like they have the same writers! All that said though, I much prefer Home and Away at the moment, there are so many things going on under the big storylines and the portrayal of the storylines is just of a general higher quality!
Pierced Musie Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 I know it's not a soap but there is a big storyline in H&A that is just like ER. The death of Dr. Mark Greene & Flynn's illness are very similar.
Penie Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 The reason why stortlines are the same are because Soaps wouldn't now what to do!!! And they portay it different ways!!

For even more on that, look up 'The Hero's Journey'. There is one storyline that can be applied to just about anything. The first thing we did in scriptwriting at university was apply a list of 'Hero's Journey' plot points to a whole lot of movies, including Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and The Matrix. All movies have the same events, the same turning points, the same characters (eg 'mentor' who 'dies' so the hero has to go it alone). George Lucas' original Star Wars script was a mess. He discovered literature about 'The Hero's Journey', and re-wrote the script completely so that it is the famous story we know today. There are no original stories, only re-tellings that are done really well.....
Josh Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 I think that the reason for all these similarities between Home and Away and Neighbours is that Channel 7 axed Neighbours, let Channel 10 pick it up and turn it into a success, and then they create Home and Away to compete with it. Even at the beginning there are extremely similar characters: Compare Alf and Ailsa to Madge and Harold. Now virtually every character on Neighbours has to a Home and Away equivalent. I'd say the most recent copied storylines are the stalker, the cancer storylines and the Affirmacon storyline, first with Brett Macklin, now with Project 56.
Frankie Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 I dont think its about Neighbours copying Home and Away or Vice Versa...these are standard soap storylines...have you fogotten how many soaps had stories about kidney transplants a couple of years ago...I think they all did! Its is about how they tell the story and about how they make each telling of it different which interests me.
Tulip Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 Not really about storylines but there are some similarities in characters from Home and Away and Neighbours. Doctor married to a teacher: Karl and Susan/Flynn and Sally Lawyer: Morag/Toadie Someone to do with police: Stuart/Peter, Jack Local man owning businesses: Lou owned his pub, mechanics, houses/Alf owned Diner and boat Interfering character: Harold/Colleen Group of school-age characters: Bree, Rachel, Zeke/Matilda, Lucas, Ric, Cassie Older character fostering younger characters: Harold/Irene Bars built after fire destroys old premises: Scarlet Bar after Paul burnt Lou's Place/Noah's Bar after Ric burnt Kiosk Doctor kisses another woman behind wife's back: Karl and Izzy/Flynn and Leah Never-ending paternity storylines: Izzy/Hayley Evil woman: Izzy/Josie, Amanda These aren't really to do with soaps copying each other, just similarities I've noticed. But there are limited storylines to do. If you look into it too deeply, you'll end up thinking, "Oh my gosh, Leah and Dan got married in Home and Away. They copied Neighbours where Max and Steph got married!" It's just up to each programme to make sure their stories are different enough so that they're not just copying and competing with each other.
