Well, they were teenagers.

In my experience, that is exactly how teenagers behave. I have memories of the most complicated 'love' triangles, quadrangles, etc.! I was forever sorting out my friends' love lives when I was in high school. And we all took it so seriously. Of course none of the relationships lasted past graduation.......
