I'd say that it wouldn't be too far fetched that Pete was adopted...

When the two brothers discover the adoption, it 'comes out' that they have always struggled with their feelings for one another. They realise that there is nothing legally preventing their union and share a heartfelt kiss on the beach. They lie in the sand and fall asleep in one another's arms and give Colleen a nasty shock the next morning. I've been thinking about this too mcuh.
