An "Instrumental" Episode

I mentioned this over on Ste's site as well.

After listening to some instrumental music last night, first Enya's "Watermark" and then Mike Oldfield and "Tubular Bells", do you think it would work to show an episode where little or no words are spoken.

I doubt it. It would just be a bit weird. You get those flashback bits in H&A where they just show clips of old scenes to some nice music, a good example of this would be Alf's 60th birthday. But a whole episode where the soundtrack consisted solely of music would be a bit strange.

Non-spoken shows have their place in art and everything, I just don't think it would really work very well in a soap.

Interesting idea though.

I think it'd be really interesting to watch. Look at Tom and Jerry, you can turn your back from the TV and know exactly whats going on just by listening to the music. If H&A (or any other soap for that matter) picked the music to be used carefully and with enough thought, there shouldnt be any reason why it couldnt work. The actors are all talented enough not to have to talk to tell us whats happening!

Of course, this idea would leave it quite open to viewers interpretation, so maybe it might be an idea to do a version of the episode with the dialogue in

There would have to be some special reason why they were doing it. They couldn't just do it for an epsode say where Leah burns someone's dinner and Lucas and Matilda fall out. It would have to be something special like maybe an episode consisting of dream sequences or something.

That way you can be more surreal and there's more chance that using just music would work.

I totally agree, it could work if it was something out of the ordinary, if it was just a normal episode but with music instead of dialogue it would be weird.

I'm having visions now of Leah burning the dinner to the soundtrack of Tom & Jerry, you know that sound they always make when Jerry laughs? I'm hearing that when Leah burns the dinner!

Instrumental, interesting. I suppose the "Hush" episode in Buffy was like that, no one talked in it at all, they just had music. Creepiest episode ever and it won a lot of awards i think.

Although i'm not sure it would work for a soap. For example, I tend to be doing other stuff when watching H&A so sometimes i'm out of the room, i rely on those words lol! :P

I think it would be good to do more instrumental scenes, but a whole episode might be a bit wierd.

Maybe a funeral or something could be done as an instrumental. Perhaps where flashbacks are needed to explain the death, also the effects on everyone else and the funeral itself. It would work well in that instance, or another landmark episode.

it would be interesting to see but i dont think it would work in a an normal episode but if they did a sort of one off episode about one of the characters that might work but i cud be wrong it could work you never no until theyve tried it.

Nah...i don't think so...maybe a sad episode, like someone's death or anything devastating. But i dont think it would work. seeing its a soap which means something is always going on, and so there would have to be words

wow, that seems like an interesting idea.

i agree that there'd have to be some dialogue though, if not it'd remind me of a laurel and hardy movie or something, haha. and i'd get confused as to what's going on :-/
