Tamxxx Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 I was wondering is rape and sexual abuse kind of the same thing?, I see no difference in it. Like, I know Dani got raped and Cassie got sexually abused, wasnt these storylines quite similar or am I on a totally different track here?
MarMar Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 In my opinion, you can be sexually abused without getting raped. Being forced to perform sexual actions on others is sexual abuse, but rape is when you're forced to having intercourse. Sexual Abuse on Wikipedia.
nenehcherry2 Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 yeah and Carly got 'attacked'. Apparently censorship laws are such in Australia that the word 'rape' has never been used in 'Home and away' or 'neighbours'. When Julie in neighbours found out she wasn't Jim Robinsons daughter, for example, she found out she was the result of an 'attack'.

When Julie in neighbours found out she wasn't Jim Robinsons daughter, for example, she found out she was the result of an 'attack'. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think that is incredibly sad. It is ridiculous to censor the word 'rape'. Just look at how many young people have posted on these boards, saying what happened to Dani 'wasn't serious', or that 'she wasn't raped'. And before I open up the old debate, it has been confirmed over and over by writers and actors that Dani was raped. Even if she wasn't, sexual assult is hardly a walk in the park. I think there are so many levels to sexual assult that you can't really apply one term to every incident. For example, I have spent extended periods of time in India. You would be hard-pressed to find a woman who has been in India who hasn't been sexually assulted in some way - sometimes 'minor', sometimes worse. It's ingrained in the society - you almost get used to people groping you in the street. But then there are people, like Cassie, whose experiences were very different indeed.
Mrs Mark Furze Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 I didn't realise these words had NEVER been used in either shows, i thought these laws were just invented in the last 5 years or so in Australia. I have noticed the word "rape" has been used in 1980's shows, such as Prisoner: Cell Block H & Sons & Daughters. Home and Away & Neighbours both started in the 80's, how strange & i do agree, it is very, very silly. We get that word used in a daily show we get here called Doctors, i thought most Australian laws were much the same as British ones, as we are in fact, almost the same sort of country, minus a few differences of course. Australians though i think are much more friendly than some Brits, you can come across some strange people anywhere though i guess.
DaSilva Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Sexual abuse can be anything from being forced to have sex, to being forced to watch someone else have sex (even porn). Also discussions about sex in some cases are sexual abuse. I think sexual abuse is only when someone like a parent or relative or someone else in a position of power does this type of thing to a minor in their care. Like a priest or a coach, teacher, older sibling, uncle, aunt, foster parents etc. Thats my opinion anyway. Could be wrong.

Some things are not done in G rated shows...like self harming ...suicide ...etc......and you can't mention certain words or certain topics... like the wrod rape for example .... the theory is that G rated shows will be watched by small children and parents object to certain things being said...and I bet a lot of parents will have glossed over the Dani story and told their small children that kane hit Dani or something rather than say what really happened. Personally I would rather explain the reality to mine but not everyone agrees. In the UK the rules are different. I know all these thngs were dealt with in kids programmes like Biker Grove or Grange Hill... As to rape and sexual abuse..rape is a form of sexual abuse...sexual abuse is anything which involves the sexaul abuse of another person and can involve any sexual act...it can also mean involving someone in pornography... it can involve an absue of trust...eg when a teacher or a professional instigates a relationship with a pupil or a client...it can take on a variety of forms...generally though it is a term used to refer to the abuse of a child or young person by an adult.

You get these happy slapping incidents too where kids abuse other kids, often groups of kids doing horrible stuff, like rape and other forms of sexual abuse to other kids and filming it and showing it to their friends and stuff. Some people are just totally sick. There was an incident last year that was in all the newspapers and stuff where a group of 14 year old boys raped an 11 year old girl, filmed it on their mobile phones and showed it to all of the girl's friends. They should all rot in hell as far as I'm concerned. The boys were a bit older than the girl, but that's not always the case.
